Depression

Everyone knows what it feels like to get the blues once in a while. But depression is a serious illness that is more severe than a bad day and lasts much longer. Symptoms of depression stop a person from being able to function and enjoy daily activities for weeks or months at a time. It can happen to anyone, and it isn't something that people can control by force of will or "snap out of it."

Some common symptoms of depression include:

Feeling sad, guilty, empty or hopeless
Fatigue and a lack of energy and motivation
A loss of pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyed
Unusual sleep or eating habits
Mental fog -- trouble concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
Physical aches and pains
Suicidal thoughts or a preoccupation with death

We don't yet know what causes depression, but it's thought that it is a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and social influences. Because of this, the most effective treatments for depression combine medication with psychotherapy. Therapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy, can be extremely helpful in resolving the negative thoughts and feelings that come with depression. It gives patients new tools that they can use themselves to cope when their depression is making them feel down.

Some of the common medications used to treat depression include antidepressants such as SSRI's (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft) or atypical antidepressants (Cymbalta, Wellbutrin). It's important to remember that these medications have different effects on everybody, and no one medication works right for everyone. Patients may have to try a couple before finding the one that works just right for them. If the first medication they try doesn't work, they should talk to their doctor about trying something else. In extreme cases where medication is not enough, electro-convulsive therapy and hospitalization may be the answer to keeping a severely depressed person safe.

Depression is a difficult illness to deal with, but it is more common than believed and there are many people who can help. With the right treatment, individuals with depression can get back to fully enjoying life again.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are mental and physical illnesses that impact behavior, emotions, and thoughts about eating, food, body appearance, and weight. These disorders are characterized by preoccupations with food and physical size, resulting in dramatic lifestyle changes and adverse health effects. In the past, eating disorders were often diagnosed using BMI (body mass index), or by assessing someone's weight. Eating disorders specialists now recognize that eating disorders may occur in people of all sizes. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder (BED).

Anorexia nervosa, frequently referred to as anorexia, is a disorder where people severely restrict the types and quantity of food they eat. Those with anorexia have an extreme fear of eating and gaining weight and may repeatedly weigh themselves or engage in harmful behaviors such as excessive exercise or starvation. Those with anorexia often find themselves preoccupied with food, but unable to consume a healthy amount of it. This results in symptoms such as abnormally low BMI, vitamin deficiency, fatigue, fainting, and amenorrhea (lack of menstruation in women). Anorexia may cause bluish discoloration of the hands, brittle and falling out hair, yellowish skin, and lanugo (fine, downy hair). Left untreated, anorexia can lead to organ failure, brain damage, and even death.

Bulimia nervosa, typically called bulimia, is a disorder where people binge (eat large quantities of food) and purge the food that they just consumed by vomiting, laxative abuse, fasting, or excessive exercise. This behavior is usually motivated by a feeling of powerlessness over eating and a fear of weight gain or desire for weight loss. Bulimia can occur in underweight, normal weight, and overweight people. Symptoms of bulimia include acid reflux, intestinal distress, dehydration from purging, amenorrhea, and dental erosion from vomiting. Some people with bulimia have swollen parotid glands (salivary glands near the cheeks) and red scars and marks on the backs of their knuckles. Electrolyte imbalance from bulimia can be particularly severe and may lead to heart attack or stroke.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder. People with BED feel that they are unable to control the amount of food they eat and may continue to binge after reaching a point of fullness. BED binges (consuming large amounts of food) are often accompanied by feelings of sadness, guilt, and shame. Symptoms of BED include obesity, acid reflux, weight gain, and dissatisfaction with one's body. People with BED tend to experience cycles of negative emotions and binges. Binges or BED episodes can be provoked by stress, boredom, restrictive dieting, depression, and other triggers.

Other common eating disorders include:

Pica, eating things that are not food, such as paper, ice, or soil
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), disinterest in eating and avoidance of food
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED), abnormal eating that does not fall under any disorder

Many people with eating disorders do not consciously develop them, and have difficulty seeking treatment. For this reason, it's important to detect and treat eating disorders as early as possible. Treatment for eating disorders can vary from therapy visits to inpatient treatment, depending on the disorder and its severity. Treatment aims to not only restore physical health and correct negative behaviors, but to also promote psychological well-being and self-confidence.

Facial Paralysis

Facial paralysis is an inability to move the muscles in the face. It often affects only one side, and it can happen quite suddenly. Facial paralysis may make one's face feel frozen or numb.

Facial paralysis can happen when there is inflammation or damage to either the part of the brain that controls the facial muscles or the nerve that carries signals from the brain to the face. Some common causes include:

Stroke, which can affect the part of the brain controlling the face and prevent those muscles from working
Bell's palsy, an inflammation of the main facial nerve
Lyme disease
Birth trauma or difficult birth, which can cause facial paralysis in babies (usually temporary)
Head trauma in which nerves are damaged

Facial paralysis is a frustrating and frightening experience, but many cases are temporary and go away on their own. Even with more difficult cases, there are treatment options available, including rehabilitation, pain management, and surgery.

I was ordered to go in for pulmonary function test in July. I went to the hospital, and I was told that I would be receiving a phone call when my results were ready to be discussed by Doctor Labrot. Fast forward to the middle of September, and I still have not heard anything. When I called, they said "well you never called, so how are we supposed to know to call you? " That is ridiculous. I was told by the doctor that a phone call would be made to me to discuss my results. I did not know that I had to keep calling until I got my results explained to me. Then, when I did get to go in to receive my results as well as my chest x-ray, the doctor hands me a sheet of paper and on the bottom he wrote "probably normal, possible trivial, reversible, obstructive defect" and then proceeded to tell me that the reason I have trouble breathing is probably just nothing. It could be asthma, to which I replied that I had just done a half marathon earlier that week and didn't struggle to breathe anymore so than usual and rather than contemplating and answering an asthma related question, the doctor said "what was your time?" I do not feel like I have any answers, and when I asked anything, he would give half answers that didn't answer the original question. I was in there over a week ago, and I have no idea what my chest x-ray looked like, if I actually have asthma, or if the mold in my apartment (which he vehemently denied) has anything to do with my sudden inability to breathe normally.

Dr. LaBrot is an amazing and compassionate provider who is really willing to help you to achieve your goals for your best health and future. I have not ever seen a more kind or caring doctor in my 51 years of life and I have seen a lot of doctors in many states for my health issues. He really went above and beyond to answer all of my questions, asked so many pertinent questions about my background, history of medical issues and even my work and social history I hadn't thought of to maybe help answer my issues or things that could be contributing. Just a fantastic provider. Thank you so much for your care and the support staff here are wonderful and so helpful as well. 5 stars all around!

This doctor is excellent. He is efficient and spends a little more time with me than a few other doctors. His attention Is important because of my numerous health problems; there could be domino effects. He asks appropriate, probing questions. He checks all the data that my pap machine has gathered for the past year. He Informs me of the good and bad in his analysis. And he provides the data results (important) which educates me. He presents options and his opinion and includes me in the decision making. I'm able to understand and discuss any obstacles or concerns. He coaches me on actions I can take to Improve and what to expect next. That's my definition of excellent.

Dr. Labrot was great. I have recently joined his panel for my PCP care. This was my first visit with him. It was for my annual physical exam. He is detailed in his examination and takes the time to explain his findings. I was dismayed that I waited for 40 minutes after he left the exam room for the nurse to come and take care of my lab work. And that only happened after I walked out of the exam room and informed a staff that I had been waiting for a long time for my lab work and had to leave soon.

At all my visits with Dr. George Labrot dating back to the 80's, have been very good experiences....Dr. Labrot really listens to me and helps guide me in the healing process for whatever aillment I may have had....He saved my life when I was diagnosed with lung cancer...he sent me to the best surgeon...I have been cancer free now for two years...bless his heart..When friends ask who to see for a doctor..I suggest Dr.Labrot....and they are always very satisfied...

Dr. Labrot is the finest physician I have ever had In my lifetime. I live over 70 miles from the Santa Monica offices, and only drive this far because of the excellent care I receive from Dr. Labrot. Dr. Labrot has correctly diagnosed every health issue this 77 year old patient has had under his care, and has never hesitated to send me to a specialist for additional care as needed. The BEST.

Provider could have taken more time to explain what he was looking for and what various jargon meant. List of my current prescriptions was wrong (I had updated it online, so maybe the printed version was just old). I have not received a call about scheduling my sleep study. Overall it was fine. I would not enthusiastically recommend, but it wasn't a bad experience either.

I had a very satisfactory experience with this provider. Several tests were taken. I received the results the same day, the next day or the following day. I fully understood the future tests I would be having and was issued with referrals for said tests. I was issued notes and instructions regarding this visit. Dr. Labrot makes me feel welcome and understood. He understands clearly that a symptom in one part of my body can be caused in another part of my body. He suggests down to earth solutions I can use to follow through with my own self-care at home. He is amazing.
