Eye Problems

Millions of people every year have problems with their eyes. Some of the most common eye problems are refractive disorders, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and cataracts.

Refractive disorders happen when the shape of the eye doesn't let allow someone focus very precisely. They might be myopic (nearsighted), hyperopic (farsighted), or have an astigmatism, which is a focus problem caused by the cornea. Refractive disorders can be corrected by glasses or contacts.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. It happens when fluid pressure builds up within the eye and damages the optic nerve. It is treated with medications and surgery.

Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes. The retina is tissue at the back of the eye that is filled with numerous, tiny blood vessels. When diabetes damages these delicate blood vessels, they burst or leak, leading to blind spots and blurred vision. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated with laser therapy and surgery, but often vision cannot be restored.

Macular degeneration is common in older adults. The macula is the central part of the retina and is responsible for crisp center vision. Over time, the cells in the macula begin to die, making central vision blurry. An early symptom of macular degeneration is that straight lines appear wavy.

Cataracts happen when the clear lens in the front of the eye becomes cloudy, making things look blurry or faded. They are extremely common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Americans will have had a cataract. In early stages, prescription glasses and magnifying lenses can help. As the cataracts get worse, surgery to replace the lens may be the best option.

More than just one of the five senses, the eyes are heavily relied upon to communicate, work, and get around every day. It's important to have regular eye exams for vision stays in good shape for years to come.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is any surgery done to change the shape and structure of the nose. It is commonly done for cosmetic purposes, but it may also be done to reduce breathing difficulties. Surgery may include any part of bone or cartilage of the nose. In some cases, cartilage is transplanted from the ear or rib to augment the nose.

Rhinoplasty may be done for reasons that are primarily about appearance, such as:

  • Changing the shape or size of the nose to better fit the proportions of the face
  • Lifting a downward tilt at the tip of the nose
  • Adjusting an asymmetrical nose
  • Closing unusually large nostrils
  • Reconstructing a nose that has been damaged after trauma.

Rhinoplasty may also be done to correct a deviated septum or other breathing impairment. In that case, the nasal structure is adjusted so that airflow is increased to a comfortable level.

Typically, rhinoplasty is only performed on adults because kids' and teens' faces are still growing and changing. After a rhinoplasty, healing will take 1-2 weeks, but subtle shifts in the face and occasional swelling can last up to a year.

Dr. Baker seems too important to care about small concerns. I understand that he is one of the best in the area, in his field, but as a patient I would prefer my treatment be more prominent in our interactions than his reputation. Visits are always delayed and then very hurried.

I was very impressed, satisfied with Dr. Baker's bedside manners. It's rare a doctor of his caliber, show any personality at all. Whereas he had a great sense of humor, that helped ease my anxieties. His team alone side of him was friendly. Overall it was a great visit .

Biography

Dr Stephen B Baker is a board certified plastic surgeon who practices all aspects of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and is a nationally recognized expert in plastic surgery of the face. Dr Baker has both dental and medical degrees and has completed eleven years of plastic surgery training at the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. This expertise is applied to all of his patients in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Dr Baker's philosophy and approach to aesthetic surgery has been featured in magazines and newspapers such as Elle, Allure, The London Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, and many others.
