Dr Morgan has changed my view on therapy. I'm still firmly in the camp that not everyone needs therapy all the time, but there certainly are times that almost anyone could use a therapist. And I feel like I hit the jackpot with Dr Morgan. To be completely honest, I didn't know if I liked it or him, at first. I felt like I was always saying the wrong things and always being corrected. But I had never been to a therapist before, so I stuck it out. It did, after all, still feel good to talk about it. But after a few sessions, my opinion changed dramatically. His demeanor is kind and understanding, but he is simultaneously great at challenging your assumptions about things you choose to talk about with him. He will ask you probing questions and when he doesn't feel like you have gone deep enough or understand his point in discussing these things, he will continue down that path. He will also assign you homework and ask you to take notes, so be prepared to work on your problems between sessions. I think this is because you can't just work on a problem you have for an hour a week or an hour every month. A good therapist will give you tools to help you, they won't just sit there and listen passively. They will listen, question, better understand, then turn it back on you so you can also better understand how to solve issues you may be having. I will often times read my notes throughout the days to make sure I'm not "concentrating on the little black dot". It keeps me on the path and keeps me moving forward, which is the most important thing for me. Another thing that I very much liked about him was that he doesn't want to jump to medication. He explained that he will basically try many things and medication is only the last line of defense. That isn't to say that if you go to him, he will do this with you, but as a general philosophy I very much think this is a good idea. I can’t suggest him enough. Perhaps other people with more experience in therapy would disagree with me. That is fine, and I think it would be fine with him too. He was clear from day 1 that if I wasn’t happy, I am free to seek out a different therapist. But if you need some help in your life or in your relationships, I encourage you to reach out to him and give a few sessions a try. At very least it will feel good to talk about.
