Dr Emerson’s apparent lack of interest, engagement, and common sense can have a devastating physical and emotional impact on oncology patients. While I was her patient, she not only ignored tumor markers rising over 3 months—a clear sign of disease progression—but had her surrogates blow off my repeated concerns about it for months. She was very difficult to contact and did not return emails. No phone calls ever, and patient portal emails are answered by her surrogates, never by her. Patients are told to expect up to a 3 working days wait for a response; I waited 6 days for her response to a significant change in my treatment. I found out about a change in my diagnosis through my electronic medical record. Because I had an appointment with her in 10 days, she indicated that it wasn’t necessary for us to speak before then. She was unaware of some test results in my record, and I had to do an end run around her to get the urgently needed tests and imaging that showed my disease had progressed. Dr. Emerson’s lack of follow up and concern for patients as individuals means they on their own for coordinating care and getting needed auxiliary services and treatments, a needless additional stressor during what for most women will be the most stressful time of their lives. This includes checking on and following lab and imaging results, and repeated efforts to get her to pay attention.. If you are assigned to Dr. Emerson, insist on a different care provider. Your life may depend on it.
