What is Psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is a specialty founded on the premise that people possess unconscious motivations, thoughts, and feelings which may be recognized through psychoanalysis treatment. Psychoanalysis treatment takes place as recurring meetings where psychoanalysts converse with patients. Several techniques of psychoanalysis include:

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy, where sessions are more informal and are performed less frequently
Neuropsychoanalysis, where psychoanalysis is combined with neuroscience (study of the brain and nervous system) to examine their connection; this method was pioneered by neurologist and psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud
Applied psychoanalysis, where psychoanalysts research and apply psychoanalytic methods to sociological (human relationships and social interaction) study
Transference-focused psychotherapy, where psychoanalysts build a relationship of open dialogue and questioning with patients, which may reveal behavior or thoughts patients are unaware of
