Ophthalmologists - Carlisle, PA

"Upon arriving for my appt, I was told I needed a referral. As I had been treated for this retina detachment four months prior and had a claim processed with the office, I did not think I needed one. I asked if a referral could be arranged to be sent Monday, 8/1 which it was. However in order to see the Dr Wagner on the scheduled 7/29 appt, I had to pay to see him or reschedule a few weeks later. I chose to pay and was assured that a claim would be processed on Monday. I paid $3000.00 for the appointment and subsequent cataract surgery. I chose to pay and continue the process since the surgeon who reattached my retina needed to evaluate a growing macular pucker and my clouded lens was blocking vision to the reattached retina. I only discovered that Dr Wagner's surgery facility and anesthetist were out of network after the pre-op appointment. Thus I was faced with the choice of leaving and finding another provider or paying to continue. In my opinion the practice should provide this information before the pre-op so that I can make a decision under more favorable circumstances. Also, I had to call four months later in October to find out if they sent in claim which they had not, and subsequently finally did. As for the cataract surgery, it appears to adequate. I found no additional value in paying $2000.00 for his partially owned out of network surgery facility and the out of network anesthetist they use as compared to two eye surgeries I had with in network facilities that were covered by Aetna HMO."
