What is a Laryngoscopy?

Laryngoscopy is a visual exam of the deep back of the throat, or an inspection of the larynx and vocal chords. It can be done using mirrors held in the mouth, a thin flexible scope passed into the throat through the nose, or, in certain cases, a thicker scope that is moved into the throat via the mouth. The thicker scope contains a camera as well as tiny instruments to take samples or remove lodged items.

There are many reasons a laryngoscopy may be performed, including:
  • A persistent cough, especially with blood
  • Throat pain that doesn’t go away
  • A foreign object lodged in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Voice problems
  • Suspicion of throat polyps or cancer

A simple laryngoscopy performed with mirrors takes only a few minutes and can be performed in the doctor’s office. More involved laryngoscopies may require numbing of the back of the throat and slightly more time, depending on the issue being resolved. If a foreign object was removed or a biopsy was taken, you may have a sore throat for a while afterwards. Otherwise laryngoscopy is a very safe and simple procedure that can tell you a lot about problems with your voice and throat.
